Are you house shopping with cat or dog in mind? You’re not alone. According to a recent survey, one third of Millennials said one of the reasons they purchased a home was for their dog. Home buyers in other age groups, of course, are making home buying decisions influenced by their furry friends as well. Here are two important ways to make sure your home is a good fit for your furry friend:
Check local ordinances and HOA rules. Start with the municipality in which the home is located. Many cities have restrictions on the number and types of pets allowed within city limits. You’ll also want to check homeowners association rules as they relate to pets. Not every HOA allows pets and many have some type of restriction on pets. Educate yourself on a home’s pet policies before you make an offer.
Think about the home’s features. A nice-sized and fenced yard is a plus for dog owners. Whether you have cats that roam outdoors or a dog, you may want to think twice about a home on a busy street that’s full of speeding cars. Also consider the flooring. Wall-to-wall carpeting can be a nightmare for pet owners.
